British economist Jonathan Michie points towards the importance of lifelong learning, both as a necessity to deal with new technologies as they arise and to be able to distinguish between genuine political arguments and demagoguery.

Jonathan Michie is a British economist and holds the joint post of Director of the Department for continuing Education, and President of Kellogg College, University of Oxford, where he is Professor of Innovation & Knowledge Exchange.

Michie earned his degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics at Balliol College, Oxford University, and later a doctorate, after having obtained an MSc in Economics from Queen Mary, University of London. In 1983 Michie moved to the Economics Department of the Trades Union Congress and then in 1988 to Brussels as an Expert to the European Commission, before becoming an academic at the University of Cambridge in 1990. Today, holds the joint post of Director of the Department for continuing Education, and President of Kellogg College, University of Oxford, where he is Professor of Innovation & Knowledge Exchange. Michie is also a Council member of the United World Colleges (UWC) movement, and Chair of Governors for UWC Atlantic College.
